Topic:Application of near-infrared spectroscopy for determination of xanthones in mangosteen rind
Abstract:Mangosteen is a tropical fruit known as “Queen of fruits” in Asia. Rind of mangosteen is one of the best natural sources of xanthones, which have been reported providing high antioxidant activity. However, analysis of xanthones content by chemical methods are complicated. Rapid and low-cost techniques for xanthones content determination are currently required for quality control and business purpose. The aim of this work was to use near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) for determination of xanthones contents in mangosteen rind. Mangosteen were classified into three groups by colour of rind for assumed variation in xanthones fruit. Mangosteen rind was dried by tray dryer of temperature at 60 ºC for 6 hours and ground into powder which was subsequently extracted before further analysis. In this work was used high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) is chemical technique to determine xanthones (α-mangostin) content. Chemical data from HPLC were correlated to spectrum information from NIRS using partial least-square (PLS) regression for calibration. The result showed that coefficient of determination in cross-validation (r2cv) and relative percent difference (RPD) obtained were 0.78 and 2.13 respectively. The result obtained in this study indicated that NIRS is potentially applicable for xanthones content determination in mangosteen rind.
